In May of 2006, then City of Bowie Museums Director, Stephen Patrick, proposed working
with the Maryland State Archives Study of the Legacy of Slavery Department to explore
the interrelationship of religion, politics and the lives of free and enslaved Blacks
in Bowie. It was titled, Belair At Bowie Flight to Freedom. Designed as an independent
and also a complementary study to the Archives' Beneath the Underground: the Flight to
Freedom and the Communities of Antebellum Maryland project, Director Patrick subsequently
sought and was awarded a grant to fund the project from the National Park Service Network
to Freedom Program. Change in City of Bowie Museums management personnel postponed the
initiation of the project until the spring of 2008. The website officially debuted on Friday, April 03, 2009, to honor the "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King on this date in 1968. Credits: Belair At Bowie Flight to FreedomDirectors
