Slaves Fleeing the U.S. South, 1864

Fugitives

In terms of our project, we categorize those on the run as Fugitives. While we acknowledge the negative connotations of the term fugitives, it is employed here in recognition of the illegality involved. Moral justifications notwithstanding, runaways were guilty of the crime of stealing themselves; and they knew it. Fugitives ran both alone, and in groups. Fugitives were men, women, children, and infants. They fled to the Northen states, Canada, and also to family within Maryland.
