The names included on the antebellum
Maryland maps are men and women who owned property. They most likely
paid a fee to the map-maker to have their names included. Unfortunately,
maps with property owners listed only exist for thirteen of Maryland's
counties. These maps allow us to place thousands of the more well-off
members of Antebellum Maryland society. As property owners in antebellum
Maryland, many of those included on the maps were likely to have owned
slaves. When possible, the Maryland State Archives performs research
to connect the names of slaves with their owners in order to locate
enslaved as well as free residents of Antebellum Maryland. These maps
provide historians and genealogists with a powerful new tool for research.
