  • The maps included in this project are called cadastral maps. A cadastral map is a map that can show property boundaries and ownership of land parcels. Parcels are how land is divided up for ownership, use, and taxes. The names included on these Maryland maps are often the men and women who owned the property, or who were renting it and living there at the time the map was made. The named parties most likely paid a fee to the map-maker to have their names included, making the resulting maps similar to a directory of the time period. People who did not pay, did not have their names listed, so the service was often limited to the more wealthy members of the community. Unfortunately, cadastral maps including names only exist for thirteen of Maryland's twenty-three counties. However, these surviving maps allow us to place thousands Marylanders in a specific geographic location at a specific point in time. They provide a powerful tool for research.

At this time, we have no further information on this individual property owner.
